ABOUT SCBOH

About the SCBOH

The Scientific Committee on Biohazards and Occupational Health (SCBOH) is at the forefront of protecting workers from biological hazards across industries. Established in 2022 during the COVID-19 pandemic, our mission is to advance research, influence policy, and preventive strategies that safeguard workers from infectious and non-infectious diseases caused by biological hazards in the workplace.

Purpose of the SCBOH

Our goal is to raise awareness and build an international network dedicated to understanding and preventing workplace biohazards. Organising international conferences is a keyway to achieve this.

Why Join SCBOH?

  • Be Part of a Legacy
SCBOH builds on the foundations of the Working Group on Occupational Infectious Agents (WGOIA), which was formed in 2002 and has been instrumental in addressing key occupational health challenges, including malaria, silicosis, and pandemic preparedness.
  • Shape Global Policies
Our members actively contribute to major international initiatives, including the ILO’s technical report on biohazards and the promotion of stronger occupational health policies worldwide.
  • Collaborate with Experts
Engage with leading professionals in occupational health, epidemiology, and public policy. SCBOH works closely with the ICOH Scientific Committee on Occupational Health for Health Workers (OHHW) among others, supporting global conferences in Thailand (2017), Germany (2019), the U.S. (2023), and Spain (2025).
  • Make a Difference
Through special sessions at the ICOH 2024 conference in Marrakesh, we provided critical insights into occupational biohazards. By joining, you’ll have opportunities to lead research, influence workplace safety, and contribute to future conferences and publications.

Who Should Join?

We welcome occupational health professionals, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders who are passionate about improving workplace safety and reducing biohazardous risks. To join the committee, you must be a member of ICOH.

We invite you to become a member of ICOH, our SCBOH, and to join us for our symposium in Hamburg on 6 and 7 October 2025.
